A quick tale 36

A weekly chat

“Hello, it’s me. What time is it over there now? Must be lunchtime. What did you cook? Did the little one eat? Don’t give him chunky vegetables. He’s too young to chew. Mash it well. Your grandmother used to mash food with her fingers before feeding you both. Amma is fine. Yes, she takes her medicines regularly. Her arthritis is less painful. Don't worry, her blood pressure is under control also. I’ve started going for morning walks now. Doctor says it is good for health. You know how I like to keep myself busy. I stop by at the temple on my way back. I only pray to God that He keep all my children happy. And now I’ve started praying for my grandson also. Is that him crying? Why is he crying? You better attend to him first. We’ll talk next Sunday. Take care, my child.”

For Appa.

What is it with folks in India and the concept of time?
I have been in the US for 5 years, calling my parents every week and they still ask me what time it is here.
Is it that we are so bad in math and memory or is it that we just dont want to put that 1 minute of effort in calculating it before asking?
Funny.

I chat more than once a week. I think my mother is sick and tired of my calls now. Instead of saying Hello now she just says ' Enna?'.It sounds more like what is it now?

Seeing your blog makes me realize there is some meaning to ritual.
A weekend call is good for both parties concerned. Gives us somehting to look fwd. to

So glad I'm not the only one. My mom will call me at work and say, "I called ... just like that."

Moootheerrr, I'm at work, I have stuff to do! So cool that you're retired, but ...

And then she'll launch into the "Is your hair growing well? Did you put ennai on it like I told you? What did you eat for dinner last night? Is D cooking well for you?"

It won't end, but secretly I indulge her. Who else can love me like that?
