A quick tale 155

A reason for saying no

You are pretending that the thought has not entered your head. You keep stirring the sugar in your coffee and ignoring the thought that is gradually hammering its way into the main stream. You focus on what the man in front of you is saying and hope that if you concentrate hard enough the loud noise in your head will somehow disappear. The man in front of you, the one your parents have arranged for you to meet, is talking about tax saving funds. And all the time your mind is thinking ‘this is the man I will be sleeping with’. You look down at your coffee cup for fear that your eyes may give away your thoughts. You notice the curly hair on his knuckles as you lower your eyes. You know in that instant that you cannot marry him. He continues to talk about high-risk equity schemes. Later when your mum asks you why you turned him down, you’ll say ‘we were not compatible’. Surely, hairy knuckles would not be an acceptable reason.

Ammani, I was going thru a phase where I would undress men...... almost anywhere. At the mall, library, doctor's clinic and even at the temple!

I was quite sure I was going nuts :) Then I realized it was God's way of making men understand better. I heaved a huge sigh and then it was as if a huge brain fart cleared this strange train of thought. :)

You write wonderfully and thanks for sharing. Rgds Maya

Hhmm. I suppose hairy knuckles would say a lot about a person.

What about hairy ears?

It goes on to show wherever we are, whatever we are, we all go through the same plight, no matter how much we deny or cease to believe!! :-(

Hairy knuckles would DEFINITELY be an acceptable reason to turn anyone down! Unless you're also a gorilla as well, that is. :)

Oh boy! Hairy knuckles? How do somebdody get rid of it? 4 blade Gillette fusion is not exactly a knuckle shaver. Pedicure, it is then!

he he.. such are the details that only the girl in question can see. some times there will be a huge mole / wart planted right near the nose which would be so difficult to de-focus!! good one...

I would guess not. The book 'Blink' theorizes that we make our desicions in the first few seconds and everything that follows is merely justification of that.

Great post, as usual!

hmnn...probably you didn't like something about him right away..something intangible, you won't know. Knuckles is just an excuse for your mind. Plus in an arranged marriage we seek total perfection. To make up for the fact we know the person very little. Well written.

Well atleast hairy knuckles is some reason. I know of someone who rejected a guy because he has a green colored car! :-)

Read `Blink'.. it is called 'Thinslicing' if I am correct.
Ammani, QT155 was very necro (a la retro,metro...)and strangely real.

And 154's subject I think has been told and retold in your tales..if I am right.

Write thse short QTs..and I will read. Find it strenuous to read the longer ones. But then maybe I am not a `Suitable boy'

correction
QT 156 is necro.

verification word `cry klb':)))

So complex emotions into such a simple words.

One more thing I like about your tales is they are non-judgmental. We can never find which side the author is taking (if at all she is taking a side).

sigh... i once said no to a gorgeous, quite eligible guy because i saw a picture of his parents' home and they had a vase of plastic flowers in a corner. well he was in the US and I wouldnt be living in that house if i married him but i couldnt bring myself to say yes... not even an attempt at realistic looking flowers in fabric... but (gasp) plastic flowers. i knew i'd go nuts dealing with the family! sounds weird... maybe.. its fate's way of guiding us to the right guy I guess! and thank God I said no to that.. or else how would i be the mad momma today?
